Wide ScreenInsomnia Getting You Down?
A surprising number of people find it difficult to fall asleep, and/or to sleep through the night. It's not easy to get through the day on three or four hours of sleep, but many people force themselves to learn how. Other people may try desperate measures, such as self medication to get enough sleep. You need a certain amount of sleep every night, and there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get it. Getting more sleep is something that's within your reach if you make some changes and take certain actions. The approaches we'll be covering in this article have helped many people overcome insomnia, and they may work for you as well.
Lack of exercise can contribute to insomnia. You're probably familiar with many of the benefits of exercise, but it also can help you get a good night's sleep. Your body naturally needs more rest when its been physically active than when you've been sedentary. You should work out early in the day, though, not late at night. That's because exercising will put you in an active, high energy state and it takes a few hours for your body to calm down from this. You can ask your doctor or a trainer at your gym for specific guidelines on the best type of exercises to do for sleeping better and your overall health. While eating a large meal before bed may contribute to insomnia, a small, strategically planned snack can actually help you get to sleep. There are some foods that actually help your brain release chemicals that make you tired and help you sleep. Nuts -preferably unsalted, as you don't want to get thirsty- warm milk and turkey are all effective in this way. Before going to bed, you may want to make yourself a turkey sandwich -though a small one, and without any spicy toppings or condiments, which will give your body the sleep-inducing substance tryptophan; you can wash it down with a small glass of warm milk. Now you know why holidays meals where everyone eats turkey are usually followed by people starting to nod off on the couch or in their chairs.
Warm water is very relaxing, so why not take a shower or bath right before going to bed?
You can make this bath or shower a part of your bedtime routine. Relaxing your muscles can make a big difference, and the warm water will do this. Sleep will come much more naturally when all of your muscles are relaxed. If you ask around you'll find that one of the most relaxing things people like to do before bed is to get very clean in a hot shower or bath, put on clean pajamas and then climb into a freshly made bed with clean bed linens. You don't have to be discouraged about having trouble sleeping, as there are many potential solutions. Best of all, many don't cost anything and are easy to apply. Since sleep depends on relaxation, the real secret is learning how to relax and let go of stress. It's a good idea to get professional help if
you find that you still can't sleep after applying these kind of measures. Whatever you do, don't give up!
